Information Center operators in the Afigya Kwabre South District were engaged by the Food and Drugs Authority [FDA] at a forum held on Wednesday, 26th June,2024 to sensitize them on advertising requirements of herbal products as part of measures to streamline and improve their operations.
The operators were entreated to adhere to the regulations and guidelines prescribed by the Authority to avoid advertising unregistered herbal products.
Addressing the operators during the event held under the auspices of the Afigya Kwabre South District Assembly, Daniel Yaw Geraldo, the Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer [PRO] of the Authority urged them to enquire from the herbal producers their FDA certificate and the approved script to ascertain the authentication of their products before they go on air for the advertisement. He said his outfit had a monitoring team to ensure proper compliance of their directives and disclosed there were sanctions such as heavy fines and confiscation of equipments and possibly the close-down of the center for non-compliance of their directives.
Mr Geraldo pointed out that the FDA’s major policies included protecting the consumer and the general public from any product detrimental to human health.
For his part, the District Chief Executive, Hon. Christian Adu Poku wondered how one herbal product could cure several diseases. He deplored the reckless manner of advertisement on so-called sex enhancement products by the information centers describing it as morally wrong which corrupts the youth. He advocated for stringent measures by the Authority to ensure sanity prevailed.
The operators expressed appreciation to the Authority for enlightening them on some bothering issues which hitherto, were ignorant of.
