The Afigya Kwabre South District in Ashanti Region on Thursday, 6th March, 2025 joined in the celebration of Ghana’s 68th Independence Day held at the Assembly’s newly- built community park under the theme, “Reflect, Review and Reset”.
The usual annual colourful parade of students lining up for march-past was completely absent and in its place, display of cultural activities, drama and poetry recitals by some few selected schools from the District highlighted the occasion. In attendance were the District Coordinating Director, Mrs. Yvonne Naboo, some Assembly Members, a cross section of the Assembly Staff, Staff of the Ghana Education Service in the District, Security Agencies, the Ambulance Service, and a section of community members.

In her speech, the Coordinating Director, Mrs. Yvonne Naboo, who represented the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, expressed the honour accorded her and the privilege to address on the important commemorative gathering noting that the theme for the event was centered on cutting down the high cost usually associated with such anniversary.

In addition, it was also meant to reflect on our past, to review the present achievements and challenges in order to reset the nation’s path to development and prosperity. She added that Ghana is much admired to be the beacon of democracy particularly, in Africa and there was the need to use the anniversary to remind ourselves of setting the right course to economic recovery and greatness. The Director urged Ghanaians to take keen interest in patronizing our local foods and to be proud of Made in Ghana goods. She stated President John Mahama wanted Ghanaians to take their destinies into their own hands and work towards achieving the set goals of developing the nation. She further asked what the citizens could do for the country and not the other way round. In conclusion, Mrs Naboo used the celebration platform to remind ourselves the need to uphold unity which has become our strength and pride while we forge ahead with one purpose as good citizens to make Ghana great and live in peaceful co-existence.
In his brief remarks, Mr. Ebenezer Boakye, head of Finance and Administration of the District Education Service, who stood in for the District Education Director, Mr. David Akomeah Asokwa, pointed out that Ghana has come of age and it would have gone on retirement in its 68th year if it were to be human. However, he noted, there was still room for improvement towards achieving the developmental goals of the nation. He reminded Ghanaians particularly, the youth of the enormous task ahead of us and stressed the need to explore avenues to continue from where our forefathers left.

The occasion was climaxed with the display of cultural activities, drama and poetry recitals by students from Aduman Senior High School. In addition, prizes were awarded to Heman, Atimatim and Afrancho Circuits for taking first, second and third positions respectively, in a quiz competition. Certificates were also presented to Buoho, Afrancho Experimental and Heman Junior High Schools for excelling in their in-depth knowledge of Ghana’s constitution.
