AFIGYA KWABRE SOUTH DISTRICT ASSEMBLY TO IMPOSE PENALTIES ON SANITATION DEFAULTERS

The Afigya Kwabre South District Assembly has announced that, effective Monday, September 8, 2025, individuals and organizations who flout waste management regulations will face fines.

The decision follows the enactment of local bye-laws, in line with the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), to tackle the growing sanitation challenges within the district.

District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Patricia Pearl Ankrah, disclosed this during a weekend clean-up exercise at Afrancho. She expressed deep concern over the alarming levels of filth that have engulfed the district, stressing that poor environmental sanitation continues to endanger the health of residents.

According to her, offences under the new directive include improper disposal of waste in homes and public places, as well as the illegal dumping of refuse into gutters and drains—a practice that contributes significantly to flooding.

Hon. Ankrah commended Nananom and Assembly Members from the district’s 27 electoral areas for their active participation in the clean-up campaign. She also encouraged residents to make cleanliness a daily responsibility rather than waiting for organized exercises.

The DCE, however, cautioned that defaulters would be sanctioned without exception. “The law must take its course. The Assembly will not tolerate or accept pleas from Assembly members, influential individuals, or even traditional authorities,” she emphasized.

The new measures form part of the Assembly’s broader agenda to improve sanitation and safeguard public health in the district.
